When I went to the theatre yesterday Jude Law was sitting in the seat in front of me!!! Those of you on Twitter already saw me squeeing about this but I'll try to write a little more coherent about it today:

I went to the final performance of Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street as performed by the National Youth Music Theatre at the Village Underground. Now I couldn't stand the Johnny Depp movie and I normally don't know about amateur performances but I saw the NYMT perform a few of the songs during West End Live in June and was incredibly impressed (especially by the two leads Matt Nalton and Lizzie Wofford). I'm still not very fond of the storyline itself, but I was amazed by every single performance given during the show and couldn't believe the actors were only aged between 8 and 21 years. They were brilliant. And if I had gone earlier this week I would've probably tried to get a ticket for a second performance, they were just that good.

The show was set in the Village Underground in Shoreditch, which I hadn't been to before and looks like a space that might usually be a club? They had four rows of seats in a half circle around the stage area (which was just the floor really) and the actors used every inch of it. The barber shop was set up in the far back but the rest of the space varied in use between the judge's home, the pie shop and the general streets of London. Before the show and partly during the intermission the assemble was just wandering the "streets" looking very homeless and/or mental, which was a great way to set the mood. The show itself was just incredible. I really can not put into words how amazing it was. I was probably most impressed by Matt Nalton, who played Sweeney Todd, who looked and sounded as if he'd been performing on the West End all his life. I'm sure we'll be hearing plenty from him soon enough.

The reason Jude was there (I assume) is because he started off with the NYTM himself, many, many years ago (in fact, he's from Lewisham, were I currently live *random fact of the day*) and recently became a patron for them. Still, he currently lives in the States, there were ten performances all-together and loads of places he could've sat for each of them so the fact he was sitting in the seat in front of me during the one show I went to? Pretty damn awesome.

He was with two of his kids so I didn't bother him but that didn't stop me from glancing in his direction quite often. Partly because I had to look his way to catch what was happening on the stage in front of him, partly well, because he was looking so damn fine. He was wearing a tight grey t-shirt with very short sleeves making his upper arms look huge and his hair looked all crazy and amazing and he kept leaning on his hand giving him a dreamy look and... Okay I admit I was looking at him for pretty much 3 hours straight. I did see the whole show properly though, so it wasn't that bad. I can't help it he was sitting within my eye sight of the stage ;)

Afterwards I was a bit disappointed I didn't have any pictures (though I do not regret not bothering him, it wasn't the place for it) until I realised I already have his picture and signature from when I saw him during the the film festival in Toronto in 2006 XD

And that was my random celebrity encounter of the day story.

AWESOMESAUCE!!!!!!

That's so cool, I wish I had more appropriate adjectives to describe this but I'm stuck. Sounds like you had a wonderful time and staring at such beauty is always a plus :)

Haha that's quite alright, I know the feeling. I was being quite repeatative with the way I was describing the show, but sometimes AWESOMESAUCE suffices XD

I know, the first 5 minutes I kept doubting myself, because it was just so crazy. But eventually I figured out it was really him

Haha duuuude, that's really cool! I mean the performance sounds like it was really interesting to watch, but JUDE LAW! I love actors that go back to their roots like that every one in a while - it makes me respect them that much more :)

I totally agree with you! (and not just because in this case I got lucky enough to sit before this particular actor going back to his roots ;))

lmao that is so random and FREAKING AWESOME!!!1!

Dude, why are you not logged on? O_O (work is not an excuse, I'm always automatically logged on for instance :P).

He's not my favourite actor ever but I really like him in Sherlock Holmes (and I'm sure there's other things I've seen him in, I'm blanking right now thoug)

I wasn't on my own computer.

I think he's an alright actor but ever since the nanny scandal I've found him completely charmless. It's kinda ridiculous but I can't help it. XD

HOWEVER. It is still preeetty damn cool that he sat in front of you for a whole show. :D

Ok fair enough :P

I don't follow celebrity gossip, did he cheat on his girlfriend/wife? Doesn't make him any less goodlooking though :P

I love London and its ability for you to see celebs around and about. I also love that they can be reasonably unbothered by the general public here.

I have to say I don't have much experience yet with celebrity encounters in London (outside of the convention scenery which is a world on its own) but I heard about the Tennant craziness when he was in Hamlet so I was really surprised (and pleased) nobody seemed to go crazy yesterday

Date: 2010-08-08 05:31 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] artic-fox.livejournal.com
I think it depends on the circumstances. The Hamlet stage door was definitely crazy but that is because people expected him to come out, sign things, catch a glimpse, etc. I saw him again just as an audience member at a play, and he wasn't bothered by any fans, or people because I think everyone respected he was on his own time, rather than performing a show, etc.

Date: 2010-08-08 10:51 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] canadian-turtle.livejournal.com
Yeah that's true, I mentioned that to someone else as well. When they're in the audience they're just there in their on time, if they're part of the show it's different. I didn't know you saw DT in the audience once though, that beats Jude Law! :P What show was it you saw him at?

Funny story! A friend and I went to see David Morrissey in In a Dark, Dark House in Angel. First we spotted Colin Firth in the bar, and then he sat a couple of rows in front of us! Then David Tennant walked in with his girlfriend (Georgia Moffett) and sat a couple of seats away, and then we spotted Andy Serkis in the audience as well! (He and David went over and talked and hugged each other!). Probably the best celeb spotting I've ever done!

Date: 2010-08-10 12:12 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] canadian-turtle.livejournal.com
Oh wow, that's a brilliant story, you got to see so many people I adore! I love Andy Serkis too, he's such a nice guy <3

How was David Morrissey in the play? I didn't know he did theatre but I'd love to see him on stage at one point! Speaking of which I read the Legally Blonde cast will be swapped around in I think late September or early October (I don't exactly recall), would you like (and have time) to go see it before that happens?

Date: 2010-08-10 05:02 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] artic-fox.livejournal.com
Yup, it was a pretty cool day! My friend and I were excited :)

David Morrissey was excellent. It was actually a really good and interesting play (by Neil LaBute, who wrote Fat Pig, if you know it), and he was great as a stage performer.

I don't mind when we see Legally Blonde. The current cast are excellent, so I wouldn't mind seeing them again. Let me know what dates work for you and we can agree on something!

Date: 2010-08-10 06:43 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] canadian-turtle.livejournal.com
I can imagine!

I don't know the play or Fat Pig I'll run to Wiki later to have a read.

For Legally Blonde I can really go pretty much any time for the moment (I only have Death Trap booked on the 21, eee Jonathan Groff!). I'd assume you're much more tight up alright because you have a job and such so it's probably easier if you let me know what dates/days you still have open :)

Date: 2010-08-11 05:19 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] artic-fox.livejournal.com
I didn't know much about either of those Neil LaBute plays either, but he is a good writing who usually looks to address challenging content.

WHAT?! JONATHAN GROFF?! TELL ME MORE.

As for Legally Blonde, early September is probably best for me. Can I firm up some details over the weekend, and get back to you early next week?

Date: 2010-08-11 05:25 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] canadian-turtle.livejournal.com
Didn't I tell you about this? I seriously thought I had and now I am going by my lonesome :\ Uhm yeah so JGroff is playing the lead in Deathtrap at the Noel Coward Thetre and it runs until somewhere in January I think. it officially premiers in September but when I went to book a ticket last week I saw the first ones popped up for August 21 so I snapped one up already.

More info: http://www.officiallondontheatre.co.uk/news/latest/view/item110417/Beale%252C-Groff-and-Massey-in-London%253Fs-Deathtrap/

Ben Barnes is also doing a play from September - January (Birdsong) if you're interested?

http://www.whatsonstage.com/news/theatre/london/E8831276820134/Ben+Barnes+Back+on+Stage+in+Birdsong+Premiere.html

Legally Blonde early September would be great. Sounds good! I can look into it as well, whichever you prefer

Date: 2010-08-11 05:57 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] artic-fox.livejournal.com
I don't think you did, but maybe I completely missed it or forgot! (quite possible). I might grab a ticket myself at some stage.

I would love to see Birdsong though. I've read some Sebastian Faulks books, but not that one and apparently it is a great novel, so the play should be good too.

I'll firm up some early Sept dates for you and let you know as soon as I can!

Date: 2010-08-11 06:35 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] canadian-turtle.livejournal.com
I'll let you know if it's any good ;)

I was thinking to go see Birdsong either when it just comes out mid September (as I think it's cheaper the first few weeks) or late October (as I'm on holiday October 1-10). If you'd like to go together let me know if any of that works for you closer to the dates.

Take your time! :) I don't think Legally Blonde sells out completely so we should be fine.

Shows are always cheaper before 'preview night' (which is the date when the press come, and review the show). Preview tickets are cheaper because you are taking a risk on an unproven, unreviewed show. Once reviews come out in newpapers, etc, and it is good, more people will try and get tickets. Therefore, first few weeks are always the best.

LOL that's so cool. And just to think we were talking of Jude Law the other day and you were telling me all those random facts and how you hoped Matt Nalton would be like him someday AND THEN JUDE LAW HIMSELF SHOWS UP!!!! LMAO Awesome XD I'm glad you had a good time (and that you got to see & enjoy the show without being too distracted by his loveliness :P )

*SQUISHES*

Note: If I had been there, I don't think I could have helped giggling like a schoolgirl with you over the fact he was sitting in front of us. Which may have been disturbing to him, but would have been fun to us :$

Oh yes, that's right too! So if I start talking to you about David Tennant now does that mean I'll bunmp into him next week? :D

(if you'd been with me we wouldn't have sat there... It was unreserved seating and as I was alone I could pop into the single empty seat in the second row otherwise I would've sat at the back. I didn't realise Jude was sitting there until after I sat down though).

Date: 2010-08-08 08:50 am (UTC)

OMG. You got to see Jude effing Law in person! And he was sitting right in front of you! How amazing is that? It's already awesome that you got to see Sweeney Todd which I sooo wanna see as well but Jude being there to watch it is just an extra added bonus. *is jealous*

I can't say I blame you for like watching him for the whole entire 3 hours tho. lol I probably would've done the same thing. haha. It's a miracle you were still able to pay attention to the play! Sucks you don't have any pics but at least you have some from when you met him in '06 tho. Man the closest I've ever come to seeing Jude in person was at Comic Con in 04 when he was there for a panel to promote Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow.

You know I used to be a huge fan of Jude way back then but my love for him sorta died down when that whole nanny scandal started. I mean I wasn't a fan of Sienna Miller and still isn't but I thought it was so effed up with Jude cheating on her tho esp when they were engaged to be married. It was just so bad and a big mess. But yeah they're back together and supposedly engaged again. lol.

I know, it was so random but awesome!!

Ohhh you went to Comic Con in 2004 too? Wow, I didn't go to my first convention until 2007 I think. How often have you been to Comic Con?

As I mentioned above to someone else I don't read celebrity gossip and I don't care about it either. I quite liked him as an actor in the movies I've seen him in and I think he looks absolutely gorgeous ;) (and I don't like Sienna Miller. Not talking right what's he's done if it's true, but him and Sienna? Ugh).

Date: 2010-08-12 05:21 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] stephid.livejournal.com
Yeah same here. I love Jude as an actor but also can't help but drool over him cause he is gorgeous too! And yeah I'm not a fan of Sienna either. Never was. I always felt like she was with Jude just to boost her career. I remember when they first started dating, her career was just taking off and ok and behold soon afterwards she started getting acting gigs. *rolls eyes* I did feel bad for Sienna cause of Jude cheating on her back then but that never made me like her tho. Plus she actually did some cheating of her own being with an actor who was married with 4 children too. I was in such shock that Sienna would do that to a family too. So yeah that just made me just not like her period.

Yeah i went to CC in '04. Was my first time being at CC ever too. And my main reason for going was to check out the Lost panel which was it's first year being at CC. So yeah I got to watch the pilot there which was awesome. I also got to meet Dom, Evie and Foxy at an autograph signing there too which was by pure luck actually. You needed to get a ticket in order to get into the signing which I didn't know about. But luckily they gave out more tix after the panel and I was the very last one to get a ticket for the signing! So yeah that was an amazing moment for me. Lol. But I haven't gone to Comic Con that often tho. I wish I did.. Lol. So yeah the only times I've been to CC is in '04 and last year. But I have to say both times going to CC have been very different experiences for me tho. I soo wanna go to Cc again tho. Wanna go next year. Are you planning on going next year?

Ahh celebrities and their skewed views on what is accepted... this is why I don't read/follow the gossip ;)

I do actually remember you telling me that! Gosh I can't believe that was in 2004, so lang ago!! How come you haven't been more often? You live so close... (compared to me and my friends).

I'm sadly not going next yeat for two reasons: 1) Preview night is already sold out (it was at the con itself, impossible to get a hold of online) and 2) I'm likely going to Orlando (Wizarding World of Harry Potter, Disney, Universal) in October so I'm going to focus my attention on getting that booked.
