• After being unsuccessful in grabbing free tickets to A Flea in her Ear at the Old Vic I finally managed to nab some earlier this week! Unfortunately it clashed with my plans of going to see I Am Number Four with Anneke (for which I also had free tickets) but since the theatre show is in its final weeks and the movie only in previews we eventually did decide to go to the theatre instead.

A Flea in her Ear is a farce with all the usual ingredients; over the top characters and situations, mistaken identities, sexual innuendos, etc. While the play has a bit of a slow start we spent most of the second act in stitches as it went from one ridiculous scene to the next and by the time the interval came around we were both saying how pleasantly surprised we were by how much we were enjoying the show. Unfortunately the third act was the complete opposite from what we had just seen and very few laughs were had. Overall it was an enjoyable play though (even more so because we didn't have to pay for it!) and we had a lot of fun debating whether two of the characters that look identical in the play were portrayed by the same actor or not. Anneke was convinced she's seen them on stage at the same time where I was certain that it was the same actor. However by the end of it even I was confused as character one leaped off stage and character two (dressed differently and coming from another entrance onto the stage) came back on what seemed only seconds later. All was cleared up though when I saw a poster outside saying "Tom Hollander is so wonderful they cast him twice!"

• In other news: I have a temp job. It's sadly not working for the make-up department at the National Theatre (as advertised on their website) and not even remotely related to the publishing or journalism industries. Plus it's only for two weeks and a mere five hours each day at that. But it's *something* and it means I will get a much-needed income right about the time I have been seriously contemplating giving up on my dream of permanently living in the UK. I am not out of the woods by any means, but at least it's a postponement of having to make that agonising decision.

• Also, because I am ever so slightly obsessed I had to make icons as soon as the first Frankenstein pictures trickled in yesterday. Admittedly I really should stop with these six month or longer gaps between my icon making sprees as it proved to be a lot more effort to produce only these 20 icons than I'm used to and they're not even that great (plus I had to break open my old laptop as all my Photoshop resources were still hiding out on that hard drive!). Ah well, hopefully I'll get into the swing of things again soon.

Woooo a little money! I'm glad you're getting something to get you by, to buy you a bit more time. I hope something works out more in the future so you can stay!

A Flea in her Ear was the last show I saw before I had to go. I kinda liked it. I agree it started really slow, got great, then kinda slid off. But I was more excited that Beckett from the POTC movies was in it. We noticed at intermission when someone at the school when, "HOLY SHIT IT'S BECKETT FROM POTC"

Statements like that help the memory.

You know I did actually Google Tom Hollander beforehand (though unaware he'd have two parts in the play) and saw he was in PotC but I so do not recall who Beckett is o.O What was his character in the movies like?

He's the commander of the East India Company. He's the bad-guy who hunting Jack in the last two films.

I vaguely remember the character but I can't put a face to it... Probably because I didn't like PotC 2 + 3 as much as the first movie so I never watched them giving the movies my full attention. Time for a rewatch me thinks :)

I really hope you can stay too! I'm glad you picked up a temp job, did you get that yourself, or did you sign up with a temp company to find you different contracts?

The Great White North will always welcome you back too you know ;)

I've been signed up with a few temp agencies from the start but very little has come up. I complained to one of them earlier this week saying that I thought it was pointless to keep e-mailing them (per their request) on a weekly basis to state I am still available and they immediately called me saying how there hasn't been many relevant jobs available lately blabalbla but lo and behold they did get me two offers over the next few days!

Oh I know :D And I would definitely like to go back asap but I do think it'll be a holiday rather than permanently living there as I already got my 1 year working visum once and iirc the only way I can work in Canada again is if I arrange a permanent job before actually getting there (in other words nigh impossible).

Congrats on the temp job! What kind of a job is it? Is there any chance you might work for them more often? Would be such a shame for you to have to leave the UK :(

You cannot go before I move there (eventually). I'm gonna need people to do the real fun stuff with ;)

Cheers! Not something even remotely interesting (working at reception and making international travel arrangements and such for a management consultancy agency) but it's money and I can continue looking for something I would actually enjoy in the mean time :)

Haha will keep that in mind! Any estimate as to when you want to come over for more than a few days?

Thanks so much <3

It definitely had its enjoyable moments, but it was no Frankenstein (which was much better even with all its flaws!) ;)

Looking forward to some Tom Hollander on Saturday - I LOVE THAT MAN!! ♥ But first I have to survive Frankenstein if my heart can handle the whole Danny Boyle/fab cast/awesomeness XD

Yay for the work and I hope something else crops for you for afterwards. *hugs*

Good luck surviving Frankenstein!! I am sure you'll be alright though and I can not wait to hear what you think of it (and also the make-up! Because it looks so different on the recently released pictures than it did when I saw it last!).

Thank you <3

God I'm so curious about this show. I've not seen anything at the theatre in a while where I've avoided reviews, spoilers, even avoided looking at too many photos!

The National Theatre trailer video was enough for me *guh*

I will be at the NT at arse-o'clock tomorrow though. Eeeeeek!

Oh right, you have to day ticket don't you? Yikes, the press nights were earlier this week and because of all the good reviews I'm assuming it'll be even more awful day ticketing (especially on a Saturday!). Good luck!! And if all fails I know they have £5 standing tickets when it's sold out. It's back of the circle though, but hey it's better than nothing. And the production isn't very long (under 2 hours, no interval) so not too bad to stand I suppose.

I do tomorrow, yeah! I have a ticket for tonight, but I'm looking for 2 tomorrow. If it doesn't work out then I'll wait for the next lot of tickets to go on sale. STRESSES!

At least you'll be seeing it once tonight then anyway :D And tomorrow there is a matinee as well so at least it's double the chance of getting tickets!

\o/ Indeed! Oh Danny Boyle, you're my bloody hero. I shall just get lots of coffee down me in the morning, and myself and my iPod will brave the queue tomorrow morning together :)

And all the luck tomorrow morning <3

I was thoroughly stunned. I cried, too- the strength of the performances blew me away. And the staging! Wow. The lighting needs to win lots of awards :)

Well it's 7.30am and I'm here on the south bank. I should be ok, I got here at 6 (OMG) and there were about 8 people in front of me. Now I just have to stay awake during Flea.... :))

Ack I heard Benedict and Naomie Harris are ill today! I hope you are aware of this too before going to the show, it'd be such a disappointment otherwise... I am glad you had an amazing time yesterday though <3

Ha! Still catching up from last week's comments!
I only found out when I got to the theatre but I wasn't too disappointed, what I did miss was the chemistry between JLM and BC. The understudy wasn't brilliant, but it was interesting to see the scenes between Victor and Elizabeth done totally different to the previous night, with two different actors.

Glad you weren't too disappointed! What did you think of Agatha as Elizabeth? I find her terrible as the farmer's wife and can't imagine her being any better in Elizabeth's role :/

Not too bad actually, but I didn't like Naomie Harris either :)

From: [identity profile] canadian-turtle.livejournal.com
Oh really? So far everyone I heard about the play agreed that hers was one of the better performances. Why did you not like her?

Date: 2011-03-13 06:50 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] honeyfitz.livejournal.com
I just didn't find her very convincing, but I'm not a huge fan of her anyway. It's funny, there were a few performances that just stood out as being sub-par (George Harris, too, seemed to phone in his performance on the Saturday night) yet overall the whole thing just blew me away.

Oooh I love talking about it but I cannot WAIT to see it again!

Date: 2011-03-14 02:54 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] canadian-turtle.livejournal.com
Oh God yes George Harris was awful >.< I was really surprised about that tbh as I didn't think he was bad in Harry Potter. And what was up with the accent anyway? He should've made the effort to sound the same as his family.

When are you seeing it next?

Date: 2011-03-14 08:58 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] honeyfitz.livejournal.com
I KNOW! I LOVE him in Harry Potter. My housemate was quite excited about him being in it but was gutted at his performance :(

Not sure when I'm seeing it next, depends on my housemate and when I'm not working. Hopefully during the Easter holidays so I can do day ticketing again - some people are muttering about getting there at 4am o_O

It's strange isn't it? How someone can be so awesome in one thing as so dreadful in the next? I mean, of course there are multiple takes in a movie but he must've been picked as Father Frankenstein for a reason too and they play's been going for a while now so one would assume he would be able to embrace the role more than he has.

Yeah it's getting insane...
