I finally came around to start updating about Canberra (maybe, one day I'll actually finish my Singapore entries so I can post them :P). I've already posted some pictures from the trip to
angleofview earlier this week, but there's a bunch more in this entry.
September 26:
Friday night I went straight from my job to Jules as we would be leaving fairly early on the Saturday morning. I think I arrived pretty late at her place as I don't really remember what we did that night except for raiding her CD collection for music to bring on the trip to Canberra (which mind you, would only last about 3 hours and we had like 15 CDs for it, lol).
September 27:
We went to Jenny's where I first tried on some dresses for the Murder Mystery Party next week (I know right, me in a dress? o_o) before we head off to Canberra. Just like every time I made a "road trip" through Canada I was in awe with the stunning views we saw along our way, and snapped a ton of pics from the car (in between us changing CDs and me and Jenny geeking out over Doctor Who whose season 4 finale was to be aired in Oz that weekend).
Some pretty sceneries we saw on our way:

On our way we made a stop in a small town famous for it's "Giant Merino", which was interesting lol Apparently there are giant things scattered all over Australia as some sort of tourist attractions.

^ Me, Jules and Jenny and half of the Merino
Our first stop in Canberra itself was the Black Mountain Tower aka Telstra Tower, which gave us a beautiful view over the city we'd soon be wandering around in. As you can probably see from my biased pictures I loved the lake the most, its vibrant blue colour was so beautiful from above.

Since we still had some time to kill before we could check into the motel we went to the National Museum of Australia next:

^ Matt's turtle

^ Pretty nostalgic Santa picture

^ Jules in a tiny kitchen xD Which reminded us of a small kitchen we saw in a museum a few years ago

^ We also came across an exhibition about all the giant stuff that can be found in Australia O_O

^ This is apparently Australian for "Greetings from far away"

^ What the museum looked like on the outside
The last thing we went to before Floriade was the War Memorial, a very impressive and gorgeous building. It has several floors and countless rooms of archives on various wars Australians have been involved in.

^ War Memorial

^ I came across Donald Duck in there!

^ And a 1000 paper cranes
At night we went to Floriade, which is a flower festival with this year as theme "Australian movies" so they created pictures related to those movies in flower beds.

^ There was a ferris wheel which I only made a pic of because I thought it looked pretty :P

^ The only flower picture I made that night as it was too dark to see anything properly (we went back the next day on the day for that)
The main event for that night was watching the Australian movie Strictly Ballroom in the open air. And despite poor sound at times and people standing in the way quite often I really enjoyed it. We had blankets and Tim Tams, what else did we need? ;)
After that there was some evening entertainment that looked like this:

^ Still not sure if they represented giant marshmallows on sticks or the blossoming of flowers lol
Btw, we'd also bought some dinner there and since we rushed to the movie straight afterwards I stuffed the change ($40) in my pocket with the full intention to put it in my wallet as soon as we had sat down. Only I forgot and later that evening I realised I had lost it *headdesk* (same thing happened in Northampton when I was also with Jules--I normally never put notes in my pocket). I figured I'd go to the information booth just to mention this though I didn't actually think anyone would bring the money back. So I went up to the girl and before I even finished my sentence she took $40 out of her pocket she'd just found on the ground! I was so lucky with that.
September 28:
In the morning we went back to Floriade, thinking we'd actually be able to see the pictures in the flowerbeds. Unfortunately it turned out that while I am sure they were amazing, the view for us wasn't that great; from above would've been much better. Nonetheless here's some shots I made of them.

^ Jules managed to get into my shots quite often that weekend :P

^ Crocodile from Crocodile Dundee

^ You can actually see a giant music note in this pic
We also came across a bunch of interesting gnomes there, like:

^ The Joker

^ Crocodile Dundee
After Floriade we went to Questacon, which is like a discovery museum and while intended for kids/teens loads of fun for us as well.
Amongst other things Jenny and I made a free fall from 6.7 metres O_O And because Jules didn't do it she had to do the guillotine :P

^ And she got beheaded again, only now by a crocodile, lol

^ There was a test with pictures that showed what you were most afraid of which for me is apparently roses O.o

And we saw the Helix from Heroes!

After Questacon they dropped me off at the hostel and we said our goodbyes (everyone had to go back to work the next day except for me).
I went to the other end of the city that afternoon where the parliament buildings are located for a tour of the new parliament house. It was surprisingly much more interesting than I had expected it to be.

^ Sign for Floriade in the city centre

^ Swans with 5 kidlets, awww (though I saw them again the next day and there were only 3 kids left, wtf?)

^ Fountain in lake Burley Griffin

^ A Galah, a type of bird that's everywhere in Canberra

^ And this is what the trees look like there...

^ Old parliament house

^ New parliament house

^ The roof of the parliament house as seen from the inside
In the evening I went back to the hostel (there's nothing to do in Canberra otherwise even the stores closed at 4pm on Sunday O.o) where I met my roomie for the next two nights; a German girl called Sophia. It was also movie night in the hostel so later that evening we went to see Ned Kelly, which was a really good movie (and after seeing Strictly Ballroom and Priscilla Queen of the Dessert that brings the count of Australian movies I’ve seen recently to 3, lol).
