This post is mostly about my visit to the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic. I like museums, so what? :P The museum I went to on Tuesday really opened my eyes as to what great history changing events occurred in and around Halifax.

Theodore Tugboat got filmed here! I thought he was just popular; that being the reason for his life size replica in the harbour. But no: it actually got filmed in Halifax. And the harbour stood model for the TV-show. The old town clock I admired so much at the foot of Citadel Hill is in the show. A very realistic replica, just with two huge eyes attached to its "head". And lucky me, happened to catch the temporary exhibit in the museum containing all of the original models used in the kids show.

But seriously, some huge historic events did happen around here. I already told you guys about the Halifax Explosion in a previous update and my visit to this museum really made me realise the impact this disaster had on the city. Some of the pictures I saw were just unbelievable; an entire city flattened and destroyed.

And an exhibit that might catch the attention of people that are not from around here is the Titanic one. Because despite all the movies I have seen on this ship and its catastrophical ending, I for one did not know that it sunk so close to Halifax. Nor that the city of Halifax helped in the rescue, or that a lot of the people who died in the accident are buried here. Did you know? One of the most interesting relics I saw were the shoes of the unknown two year-old boy.

Last I’ll also post some pictures I made from the light of a light house that is displayed in the front of the museum. I never thought of the fact that an ordinary light should be so huge when casting sight on the sea. But it is. And it’s gorgeous as well, having many different facets creating absurd and slightly eerie shapes and colours in my photos.

Oh and btw, I AM MELTING! The heat’s getting quite unbearable now. I mean, a couple a days ago the library even put up a note saying: "Temporarily closed due to extreme heat". Hello... how am I supposed to check my e-mails without access to a public computer? Very inconsiderate of those people to put their own comfort above my net addiction LOL Just kidding.

Deze update is voornamelijk over mijn bezoek aan het museum: Maritime Museum of the Atlantic. Ik vind musea interessant, nou en? :P In ieder geval, ik ben afgelopen dinsdag naar dit museum geweest en het heeft echt mijn ogen geopend; zoveel belangrijke geschiedkundige dingen zijn hier gebeurd.

Theodore de Stoomboot is hier gefilmd! Ik dacht dat hij gewoon populair was, en dat dat de reden was voor zijn levensgrote replica in de haven hiero. Maar nee: het werd hier gemaakt en de Halifax haven stond model voor de haven in de kinderserie. De oude stadsklok bijvoorbeeld aan de voet van Citadel Hill, die ik velen malen heb bewonderd, kent bijvoorbeeld een exacte replica in de serie. Nou ja, exact, het heeft twee grote ogen op zijn "hoofd", maar daarnaast lijkt het echt op de klok. En ik had het geluk dat ik tegen een tijdelijke tentoonstelling met alle originele modellen van de tv-serie aanliep.

Maar serious, er zijn wel degelijk grote dingen gebeurd in Halifax en de omgeving. Zoals ik al eerder heb verteld, is een belangrijke gebeurtenis de Halifax Explosie en mijn bezoek aan de expositie hierover in het museum deed me pas realiseren wat een grote ramp het was. De foto’s waren ongelofelijk; de hele stad was platgeblazen en vernietigd.

En een tentoonstelling over een gebeurtenis die misschien wat bekender klinkt voor iedereen die niet uit deze buurt komt is die over de Titanic. Want, ondanks de films die ik over dit schip en zijn fatale botsing met een ijsberg heb gezien, wist ik niet dat het zo dichtbij Halifax was gezonken. Of dat de gemeente Halifax heeft geholpen tijdens de redding. En dat de meeste mensen die tijdens deze ramp zijn gestorven hier liggen begraven op speciale Titanic begraafplaatsen. Wist jij dat? Een van de relikwies die de meeste indruk maakte, waren de schoenen van een onbekend tweejarig jongetje.

Tot slot ook een paar fotootjes van een lamp van een vuurtoren die in het begin van het museum staat tentoongesteld. Ik had er nooit over nagedacht dat een doodgewone lamp zo gigantisch groot moest zijn om zijn licht over de zee te kunnen schijnen, maar het is echt reusachtig. En ook schitterend, de verschillende facetten van de lamp creëren vreemde vormen en kleuren in mijn foto’s.

Oh en trouwens, IK SMELT! De hitte is echt niet normal meer; haast onverdraagbaar. Ik bedoel maar, een paar dagen geleden hing er zelfs een briefje op de deur van de bieb dat zei: "Temporarily closed due to extreme heat". Hallo, hoe moet ik mijn e-mails lezen als ik geen toegang heb tot internet? Egoïstisch hoor van die mensen om hun eigen gemak boven mijn internet verslaving te zetten LOL Geintje.
