In 1906 Canada gained military independence. The last British garrison left the harbour leaving the Canadian Royal forces in charge. With this departure from Halifax harbour almost two centuries of British military command ended.
This being an exact 100 years ago someone thought it’d be a splendid idea for a Changing of the Guard festival; which has been held all last week at the fortress of Citadel Hill and the grounds surrounding it. Over a thousand re-enactors from Canada, the States and the UK (go Scots!), were there to celebrate the festival and participate in the various activities.
I had the pleasure to enjoy the festival on Sunday; the last and most spectacular day. Using my photographs I’ll guide you all through my day. Which was - though it was raining pretty much the entire time – in one word: awesome.
All week the re-enactors had their camps in the ditch of Citadel Hill // De gehele week hadden de acteurs hun kamp opgeslagen in de geul die Citadel Hill omringd:

In 1906 kreeg Canada militaire onafhankelijkheid. Het laatste Britse garnizoen verliet de haven, en de Canadian Royal forces namen het commando over. Met dit vetrek vanuit Halifax werd bijna twee eeuwen van Brits commando be-eindigd.
Dit jaar is het exact 100 jaar geleden en iemand dacht dat het een goed excuus was voor een Changing of the Guard festival; die de gehele afgelopen week in het fort van Citadel Hill en het land eromheen is gehouden. Meer dan duizend mensen vanuit Canada, de VS en Groot-Britannie (Schotland!) waren daar om mee te doen in het grootse spektakel en de verschillende onderdelen.
Ik heb zondag van het festival genoten; de laatste en meest spectaculaire dag. Met mijn foto’s zal ik jullie mijn dag laten zien. Die – ondanks de aanhoudende regen – erg gaaf was.
