New Zealand #9: Bus trip along the West Coast

Mood: || Productive
Tune : Westlife - "When You're Looking Like That"

July 7: The trip from Nelson to Franz Josef is one set alongside the amazing West Coast of New Zealand. We were on the road for a good 9 hours and because I can't read in the bus (it makes me sick) and for once I didn't fall asleep I had plenty of time to soak up the amazing scenery we drove through.

We left really early in the morning; the sun was just coming up. I saw patches of pink appearing in the sky amongst the dull coloured mass, pink mountain peaks and eventually everything was basking in a bright red glow. Amazing. When the sun was high in the sky I could see the snowcapped mountains peak out from underneath thick blankets of fog. They were encircled by the fog from the base, only their peaks visible as if floating on the air. Little puffy clouds of fog were also nestled in between the trees; very mystical, like we had driven into an imaginary world.

For a while we passed a landscape covered in snow peaked mountains, flowing rivers and little creeks with stony beds until we came to colder parts of the country and some of the creeks were iced over and there was snow alongside the roads and hidden between the trees.

As expected from New Zealand animal wise sheep dominated the landscape. Sometimes we passed a patch of land filled with cow or deer and once I spotted a random turkey walking around the grass in between the white dots. At one point we also had a big herd of cow smack down in the middle of the street in front of us, a huge traffic jam of cars on their tails. A lot of honking and patience later we finally managed to pass them. It was an experience on its own xD

At lunchtime we had a stop in a tiny little village called Punakaiki; known for its magnificent views on the coastline and more famously the Pancake Rocks. This was an unexpected stop for me and a lovely surprise. Instead of munching on lunch I spent my lunch half hour exploring the rock formations.

Sunrise...

...over snowy mountains

A sign at an i-site in one of the cities where we stopped. A hoodie must be something else than a jumper with a hood on it here?

Cows crossing the road!

The start of magnificent coast line views

This is from our lunch stop at Punakaiki and the Pancake Rocks

I was wearing like 4 layers and I was still cold...

But the view was worth it

I love this shot

And... we're back on the bus!

Deer farm

Awesome clock we drove by in Hokitika, apparently xD

PRETTINESS ABOUNDS :D

Oh I like those beginning shots with the fogginess! And the shot you mention that you love - it has awesome rocks :O I've never seen that sort before!

hmmm AFAIK what that shop was saying was that they don't want you coming in with your head covered inside a 'hood' because that might make you seem like a dodgy crim? IDK though, just guessing here...

That clock really is awesome!

I know, right? South Island is so pretty, and I have been so lucky weatherwise *knocks on wood*

I'd never seen rocks like that before either -- I guess those are the famous Pancake Rocks?

I took that shot fromt he buswindow (like most of the pictures), totally unprepared to take a picture at the time - I can't believe how well it came out

[identity profile] never-evil.livejournal.com 2009-07-15 08:44 am (UTC)(link)
four times!

Maybe...I've never heard of Pancake rocks. Maybe [livejournal.com profile] artic_fox will have some info for you. I am South Island illiterate lol

ha just like that Ruapehu pic came out well - except I know there you were actually waiting for the cloud to go away.

[identity profile] canadian-turtle.livejournal.com 2009-07-15 09:01 am (UTC)(link)
These are the Pancake Rocks for sure (there was a huge sign) xD I just don't understand its naming entirely as they didn't really remind me of pancakes. Then again, I haven't had New Zealand pancakes yet :P

I forgot about that one, I suppose I've had some bus window picture taking practise by now

[identity profile] never-evil.livejournal.com 2009-07-15 09:04 am (UTC)(link)
oh lol fair enough. Hmmm I guess by pancakes they mean the thin layers one over the top of each other? Oh whatever...they call them pancakes so we will just accept it XD I'm sure our pancakes are no diff from anywhere else's :P

yes it would appear so heh

[identity profile] canadian-turtle.livejournal.com 2009-07-15 09:19 am (UTC)(link)
Someone just commented with the most logical explanation ever: it's referring to a stack of pancakes, d'uh

Pancakes are very different all over the world though. Dutch ones are big plate size and very thin and in Canada they are small and thick.

[identity profile] never-evil.livejournal.com 2009-07-15 09:21 am (UTC)(link)
lol yes that would make sense XD

Oh true? I never thought that different places would make it differently but now that you mention it that's another d'uh worthy thing. I guess I'm just a bit slow tonight lol

[identity profile] canadian-turtle.livejournal.com 2009-07-15 11:34 am (UTC)(link)
*pats* That's ok xD Which variant is the NZ one? I am assuming the thick small ones, but I could be wrong.

[identity profile] never-evil.livejournal.com 2009-07-16 08:07 am (UTC)(link)
...

another question I don't know the answer to. Never made pancakes myself and whenever someone does make them here and offers me some I don't look I eat :P

lol am I useless with NZ info or what?

OH and my parents told me to tell you they adored the card! They got it today (lol incidentally on my dad's birthday). You're so adorable for sending one. <3

p.s. that turtle card that you pointed out to me and I ended up getting went down pretty well lol

[identity profile] canadian-turtle.livejournal.com 2009-07-18 09:51 am (UTC)(link)

You'll know if your pancakes look like THIS () or THIS (http://haysvillelibrary.files.wordpress.com/2009/02/pancake-stack.jpg) (American), right? ;P

Just a little bit :P

Oh yeah, I am glad they got it! Though srsly fail for NZ mail for being uber slow (though I suppose in this case the timing was rather nice)

Glad your dad like the birthday card too xD

Yeah, the hood sign will be because of security cameras etc, I've often seen signs like that on banks, it's so they know they can catch your face on camera... not entirely sure why an i-site has one, though, but whatever.

[identity profile] never-evil.livejournal.com 2009-07-15 09:15 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks for clarifying. Good point about the camera. Yeah I really was wondering why an i-site needed one but maybe the area is a more dodgy one in general or something so they are being cautious.

[identity profile] canadian-turtle.livejournal.com 2009-07-15 09:22 am (UTC)(link)
That makes sense, thanks for clearing that up!

I was thinking you're not allowed to wear the actual jumper the hoodie is attached to, but just the hood makes more sense xD

[identity profile] jaydeyn-sitari.livejournal.com 2009-07-15 09:13 am (UTC)(link)

Those are amazing rocks! Almost like shale in formation... wow. WOW. :D

And at a guess, the jacket with a hood is a hoodie. It is here. :)

:)
Jaydeyn

[identity profile] canadian-turtle.livejournal.com 2009-07-15 09:32 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah that's what I know as a hoodie as well. I just didn't know why you're not allowed to wear one, but someone just cleared that up and made me realise it's just the hood part that you're not allowed to wear when going inside of that i-site ;)

[identity profile] cornix.livejournal.com 2009-07-15 09:14 am (UTC)(link)
This looks like the same bus trip I took when I was 12! Except we ended up at Fox Glacier instead of Franz Josef because my mother's friend ran a motel there.

I think the Pancake Rocks are called that because they look like they're in stacks... but yes, I've never seen such oddly shaped pancakes!

[identity profile] canadian-turtle.livejournal.com 2009-07-15 09:33 am (UTC)(link)
It's like I am stalking you everywhere only years later :P I went to the Fox Glacier as well, for my skydive! Which I'll post about tomorrow

You have such a logical and sound explanation, of course they mean stacks *facepalms*

[identity profile] miss-miso.livejournal.com 2009-07-15 10:32 am (UTC)(link)
You take such lovely photos! The West Coast looks as wild and beautiful as I remember it being. But, OMG, you look so cold, you poor thing! My parents have been whining about how cold it is in the North Is, but it must be quite a bit colder down south.

And, yep, your flist is right: a "hoodie" is NZ slang for a jumper with a hood. You can wear it, just not with the hood up. Due to security issues, not the fashion police! They're popular with tweenie gangs. Not the hardcore dudes, just shoplifters etc.

Glad to hear you're still having fun :)

[identity profile] canadian-turtle.livejournal.com 2009-07-15 11:33 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you :) Haha I was very cold that day! Though it's been much colder than that now but I've quickly adapted to the weather ;)

We have the term hoodie as well I just couldn't figure out why people weren't allowed to wear it. But then someone pointed out it was just the hood part you had to keep off, which makes sense (though not really in an i-site)

Having a blast! :D Flying back to Sydney on Saturday though

[identity profile] decadentdream.livejournal.com 2009-07-15 10:53 am (UTC)(link)
well I'm not going to repeat Parul over the hoodie & the pancake rocks, but I believe she is right ;)

So pancakes are not only yummy, they make very pretty rocks as well! XD (You're so gonna make me hungry!)

[identity profile] canadian-turtle.livejournal.com 2009-07-15 11:34 am (UTC)(link)
Enchanted icon! I bought the movie here in New Zealand (NZD 15!!) xD

I think you're making yourself hungry with having food in your icon though :P

[identity profile] never-evil.livejournal.com 2009-07-16 08:08 am (UTC)(link)
loving that icon!

[identity profile] red-sunflower.livejournal.com 2009-07-15 04:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Those rock formations are incredible! All your photos are eye catching, thanks for sharing them!

[identity profile] canadian-turtle.livejournal.com 2009-07-18 09:54 am (UTC)(link)
I am glad you like them :)

[identity profile] artic-fox.livejournal.com 2009-07-15 05:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh yay, you went to Pancake Rocks! (Punakaiki!). It is pretty there especially at high tide when the water swells and sprays up.

A hoodie must be something else than a jumper with a hood on it here?

No, a hoodie is exactly that - a jumper with a hood! I imagine it is a security thing that they don't want people to wear them.

You're more in my territory now. I'm pretty good with South Island stuff. :D

[identity profile] canadian-turtle.livejournal.com 2009-07-18 09:55 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah I finally figured as much -- lol my brain it is slow.

You are good with this stuff xD

[identity profile] artic-fox.livejournal.com 2009-07-18 10:41 am (UTC)(link)
Well, I'd hope I was somewhat good with NZ stuff, considering I lived there for most of my life, but as you've seen I kind of fail in having *done* a lot of it, haha.

[identity profile] canadian-turtle.livejournal.com 2009-07-19 01:00 pm (UTC)(link)
I think you're doing a good job :)

[identity profile] gossy16.livejournal.com 2009-07-18 05:32 pm (UTC)(link)
omg, the views really do look amazing! :D

[identity profile] canadian-turtle.livejournal.com 2009-07-18 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I couldn't even fall asleep in the bus (for once) because I was so in awe with the scenery...

Btw random; but do you know more yet about Disney/Universal. So confused timezonewise (as I moved timezones again too) so no idea how many days/hours later we are now :P
