New Zealand #12: (trip to) Queenstown

Mood: || Sleepy
Tune : Watching Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

July 11: The bus trip to Queenstown was quite uneventful. The scenery was nice though, and the place where we had our lunch stop was covered in snow, which was of course awesome, but I think I've had enough bus trips in the past month and I am getting kind of bored of it...

July 13: Because I went on a day trip to Milford Sound on the 12th (which I'll make a separate update about) I technically only had half a day in Queenstown itself. Not long enough to do any of the major attractions (gondola up the mountains, skiing, etcetera) but enough time to browse the city and soak up the atmosphere.

What I remember most vividly is that it was so cold, omg! The coldest I've felt in New Zealand by far. In the morning I pretty much went from one store to the next because I couldn't stand being outside too long. But when the temperature rose a bit and it became more comfortable outside I made a nice stroll through the Queenstown Gardens and along the waterfront; which gave me an amazing view on the Remarkables (the famous mountain range that can be seen from this city). I also went to the cemetery because it's situated in front of the snow covered mountains and made for some amazing views (plus I love the decayed angel statues, they're just so pretty).

And of course I went to this cafe/bar/restaurant called Fergburger, which is very famous in New Zealand (or at last amongst travelers). Everyone I spoke to who'd been to Queenstown already recommended it to me. I ended up getting the one called Bombay which besides the salads had incredible soft chicken breast in it and mango chutney, nom nom nom Btw, as you can see on the picture it was the biggest burger ever. But somehow I managed to finish it xD

Early in the afternoon my bus for Dunedin left. I planned to read up on the city whilst in the bus and plan my few short days there but I ended up talking with the guy (he was Scottish and of course had the awesome accent xD) next to me for the entire trip as well as the bus driver and a smart little kid that sat in the front.

Finally saw a kiwi!

MY FERGBURGER!

Do you see the clock on the mountain? We passed it when driving from Queenstown to Dunedin, I think the little village is called Alexandra

I loved that name too -- it's because they're situated straight from North to South or something, which is apparently really rare.

Giant burger was AWESOME to eat xD

Okay, that first river pic... *has images of Liv Tyler and Elijah Wood riding over the river and big giant horse-waves crashing down on their pursuers* I know lots of the film was done in Queenstown so I gotta wonder! haha

Your pictures = such prettiness!!! Are you at Gen's now? I can't believe how quickly you seem to be posting *agrees with Ade's sentiments*

Not Queenstown, Wellington I think... Or at least according to the location guidebook :(

I arrived last night :) The reason I am posting so much is that I want to be finished before going to the US and I can only do that if I post once every day :D

am I the only one who thought about Blink on seeing those cemetry pictures?

That bird picture came out so well!

LMAO if all Kiwis were that huge we'd be running scared over here

[identity profile] canadian-turtle.livejournal.com 2009-07-19 10:55 am (UTC)(link)
Dude I couldn't think of anything else but DW when I was there :P

You mean to say Kiwis are not this big irl? No way! No wonder I didn't see any -- I was looking for something that wasn't there....

[identity profile] never-evil.livejournal.com 2009-07-19 12:17 pm (UTC)(link)
I would have been so creeped out looking over my shoulder every two secs. But yeah that cemetry is so cool!

lol I bet you trampled over tons of defenseless kiwis and didn't even notice!

[identity profile] canadian-turtle.livejournal.com 2009-07-20 01:39 am (UTC)(link)
D: You're calling me a kiwi killer!

[identity profile] never-evil.livejournal.com 2009-07-21 11:03 am (UTC)(link)
But only after I knew you were safely away from NZ and thus in no risk from NZ authorities!

You're so considerate <3
